    Phil Bennett Obituary

    The Welsh Rugby Union expressed their condolences and appreciation on Twitter;

    “Such sad news from Llanelli this evening with the passing of Phil Bennett, a Welsh rugby legend in every sense and true gentleman. Our deepest condolences to Phil’s wife Pat, their family and his many, many friends. Rest in peace Benny.”

    Paying tribute on their website, the Lions said:

    “He is widely recognised as one of the all-time greats of the game and dazzled in both the red of Wales and the red of the British and Irish Lions at the height of his career in the 1970s.”

    From 1969 to 1978, Phil Bennett OBE (24 October 1948 – 12 June 2022) was a Welsh international rugby union fly half. His charisma and wide range of feats, notably his legendary sidestep and swerve, made him an audience favorite.

    Bennett was a 29-cap international rugby union player when he retired in 1978. He ended his career with a bang, scoring two tries in a 16-7 victory over France at the Arms Park. Wales won their third Grand Slam of the 1970s, and their second in three seasons, with the victory.

    He spent 16 seasons with Llanelli RFC, where he played club rugby. He also made 20 appearances for the Barbarians, including the legendary match against the All Blacks in January 1973.

    Phil Bennett was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in November 2005, and the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

    Phil Bennett, one of the best fly-halves to play for Wales and the British and Irish Lions, has been honored by the rugby world. After a protracted illness, the 73-year-old, who was known for his spectacular attacking play, passed away.

    He was a key component of a golden Welsh age, having played 29 Tests for his nation, scoring 166 points and assisting in the triumph of two Five Nations grand slams, notably the 1978 title when he scored two tries in a 16-7 win against France in Cardiff.

    Bennett, popularly known as ‘Benny,’ is unanimously considered as one of Wales’ finest ever players, renowned for his deft play, range of passes, and ankle-snapping sidesteps. H
