Petra Mayer Background and Education – Mayer grew raised in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Amherst College with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1996. According to an interview with her mother, Elke Mayer, she decided to pursue a profession in radio while studying there.
Mayer began working for NPR as an engineering assistant intern while still in college.
Mayer went to Boston, Massachusetts in 1997 to work as a news reporter for WBUR, a public radio station. She graduated from Columbia University with a master’s degree in journalism in 1998 and was hired as an intern at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Prague. Mayer had been an archivist and audio editor there for two years.
In the year 2000, Mayer returned to Washington, D.C. and joined NPR.
