She also acted alongside Ricardo Montalbán in Two Weeks With Love (1950), in which she played a young woman who falls in love while on vacation in the Catskill Mountains.

Powell appeared in two films in 1953: Small Town Girl, in which she co-starred with Farley Granger and Ann Miller and played the daughter of a small-town judge who falls in love with a young man (played by Granger), and Three Sailors and a Girl, in which she played a Broadway performer whose show is backed by three sailors docked in New York City.

Powell played Milly Pontipee in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in 1954.

Powell moved to theater once her contract with MGM expired in the late 1950s and her film options began to dwindle.
Powell made his stage debut in Meet Me In St. Louis, a Cincinnati-based musical, in 1972.

She performed “Love Is Where You Find It” in a program hosted by Michael Feinstein in March 2009, in which he highlighted movie musicals in general and MGM musicals in particular. On September 10, 2010, she performed with Pink Martini at the Hollywood Bowl.
