Robert Philip Hanssen (born April 18, 1944) is a former FBI double agent who worked for Soviet and Russian intelligence services against the United States from 1979 to 2001. The Department of Justice called his espionage “possibly the worst intelligence disaster in US history.”
Hanssen is currently serving 15 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence, a federal supermax prison in the Colorado town of Florence.
Hanssen approached the Soviet Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) in 1979, three years after joining the FBI, to offer his services, launching his first espionage cycle that lasted until 1981.
He resumed his espionage activities in 1985 and continued until 1991, when he cut off communications during the Soviet Union’s demise, fearing exposure. Hanssen re-established communication the following year and continued until his arrest. Hanssen remained unidentified to the Russians throughout his spying.
Hanssen sold the KGB thousands of classified documents detailing US strategies in the event of nuclear war, advances in military weapon technology, and aspects of the US counterintelligence program.
On February 18, 2001, Hanssen was arrested near his home in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Vienna, Virginia, at Foxstone Park,[5] after leaving a package of classified materials at a dead drop site.
