Tim Robbins (October 16, 1958) is an American actor, screenwriter, director, producer, and musician. He is most recognized for his role in The Shawshank Redemption as Andy Dufresne.
Robbins grew up in New York City after being born in West Covina, California. Mary Cecelia and Gilbert Lee Robbins were his parents, and he has two sisters, Adele and Gabrielle, as well as a brother, composer David Robbins.

At the age of twelve, Robbins began acting in theater and joined the theatre club at Stuyvesant High School (Class of 1976).
Robbins began his acting career at Theater for the New City, where he performed in their Annual Summer Street Theater as a teenager and also starred in a musical rendition of Antoine de Saint-The Exupéry’s Little Prince. Robbins created the Actors’ Gang, an experimental theater group, in Los Angeles after graduating from college in 1981 with actor pals from his college softball team.
