She is the daughter of actor Johnny Brown, who played Nathan Bookman on the 1970s sitcom Good Times, and was born in New York City. June Brown, her mother, worked as a studio manager. Sharon graduated from Hollywood High School, where she appeared in the musical Mame and the film Wonderful Town as Mame Dennis and Ruth Sherwood, respectively.
John Brown Jr., her brother, is her only sibling.

Brown has appeared on stage numerous times, including as Effie in both Broadway and touring companies of Dreamgirls, Violet in the musical Maggie Flynn, and the narrator in several renditions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
She’s also toured with The Wiz, Rent, and Jekyll & Hyde performances. For her portrayal in the touring version of Dreamgirls, Brown was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award in 1987 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production.
A Chorus Line (1985), For Keeps (1988), Sister Act 2 (1993), What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993), Blues Brothers 2000 (1998), and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge are among her film credits (1999). Brown made her television debut in 1971 as Daisy on the CBS soap opera Love of Life, and from 1989 to 1990 she played Chantel on the NBC soap Generations.
“And the Doorknobs Shined Like Diamonds,” a 1981 flashback episode of The Jeffersons, featured her as a young Louise. Good Times, A Different World, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are among his other episodic television credits.

Billy Blanks Jr., the son of Tae Bo fitness icon Billy Blanks, was her husband. They made a series of workout films and taught in fitness studios in Sherman Oaks, California.
Blanks proposed the program to Shark Tank in 2014 and was offered a deal. Elijah, their adoptive son, is their only child. They are no longer married.
