In just over two years, Stefanovic has had five female co-hosts. For the first time in 12 years, the team took the show to the top of the breakfast TV ratings in 2016. Wilkinson resigned from the Nine Network and Today on October 16, 2017, after ten years with the network, due to a contract disagreement with management about the huge gender pay disparity that existed between her and long-time cohost Karl Stefanovic.
Wilkinson herself announced her departure on Twitter, and then announced her return to Channel Ten just over an hour later.
Wilkinson disclosed in her 2021 book, It Wasn’t Meant to Be Like This, that she had been fired from the Network due to her proposal for a more equitable compensation structure.

Wilkinson co-hosted Carols by Candlelight on the Nine Network from 2008 to 2016, succeeding long-time host Ray Martin when he semi-retired. Karl Stefanovic was Wilkinson’s co-host from 2008 until 2012, and David Campbell joined her in 2013. After leaving the Nine Network in 2017, she was replaced by Sonia Kruger.

Wilkinson was chastised by The Daily Mail in 2017 for wearing a top she’d worn four months prior on live. Karl Stefanovic, her cohost, had previously gone a year without garnering attention by wearing the same suit every day.

Wilkinson married Peter FitzSimons, an author, journalist, and former rugby international, on September 26, 1992, and they had two sons and one daughter.
In the 2016 Australia Day Honours list, Wilkinson was named a Member of the Order of Australia for considerable service to the print and broadcast media as a journalist and broadcaster, as well as to a number of youth and women’s health organizations.
