Helping Her Win is a book written by Nigerian Women’s Right Activist Chiamaka Ugoo Juliet. The book seeks to promote self-reliance and independence for the Nigerian Girl child. For Chiamaka Ugoo Juliet, writing the book is one thing, and carrying out an outreach to directly reach the young girls is another. She has taken the bold step to carry out an outreach in various schools in the country.
She began her outreach by visiting the girls of Union Secondary School Amawbia in the Awka South LGA of Anambra State, where she distributed nearly 200 copies of the book to students from JSS 1 to SS 3 as well as female teachers. The book was sponsored by a former student of the school, Mr Ebuka Okoye, who was the school’s senior prefect in the 2013/2014 academic year.
The author, Chiamaka Ugoo Juliet’s strong desire to ensure the safety of young women in the society, quickened her to begin an outreach program where she instructs and also teaches young girls various things that can impact their lives positively. Generally, some of the values she has endeavoured to innoculate in the young minds include;
1. Developing a sense of independence as a young woman in a male-dominated world.
2. Building boundaries to avoid mistakes caused by Pre-marital sex and Immorality.
3. Being focused and committed to achieving dreams and set goals.
4. Impacting other lives positively as much as you can.
5. Being Role Models for change in a society beguiled with corruption and perversion.
The author of the book, Chiamaka Ugoo outlined the points above as the hallmark and pillar of what her book, Helping Her Win stands for.
In a more detailed form,
1. Developing a Sense of Independence As a Young Woman in a Male-dominated World
The author of the book, while distributing her book Helping Her Win told the students of Union Secondary School Amawbia in the Awka South LGA of Anambra State, that it is good if they srtive for excellence in their academics and in all they do to be able to stand out in a world where it seems their is male dominance.
2. Building Boundaries to Avoid Mistakes Caused by Pre-marital Sex and Immorality:
Chiamaka Ugoo also stated to the young girls who listened to her fervently that they should build boundaries to avoid making costly mistakes and behaviours that could jeopardize their future. The young girls at the school listened rapturously as the author told them a story, In her words she said;
In our second year of secondary school, I had a wonderful friend who unfortunately became pregnant, and that pregnancy devastated her life. Her family was humiliated and disappointed, and her father suffered BP as a result of her actions. They married her off to an old guy in the community when the boy who got her pregnant refused her. While we were studying for the WAEC, she was ready to give birth at the age of 15, and while we were at university, she was living in the village with an elderly man. I finished university and went on a trip around the world. About 12 years later, I was in the country and saw her driving down the road; I parked and ran towards her; she didn’t recognize me at first, but when she did, she was ashamed and said she would have hidden if she had seen me earlier; she began crying about how she had ruined her life; she was one of the brightest students in our class at the time, but she had ruined her life by engaging in early sex. Don’t be fooled by any boy; he doesn’t care about you and only wants to use you and ruin your life.
3. Being focused and committed to achieving dreams and set goals.
The lovely author stated that her mission is to secure the futures of at least 50,000 young women in our society by providing them with free copies of the life-changing book “Helping Her Win,” and that her vision is to help reduce the rate of immorality, help young women develop a sense of self-confidence, and believe they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
4. Impacting Other Lives Positively as Much As You Can
She also told the girls that they themselves can be agents of change and models of excellence in their respective personal endeavors. Without being told, the students could see the impact their resource person Chiamaka Ugoo Juliet, was making in the society and they could take a cue from all the lessons she taught. The students themselves were personally challenged to also live a life full of impact and in dedication to God and humanity.
5. Being Role Models For Change in a Society Beguiled with Corruption and Perversion
She mentioned to them not to allow men deceive them into immoral living and careless attitude. Chiamaka Ugoo Juliet cited examples of the consequences of living such life backing her lessons with real-life examples and situations.
This is the full text of her speech to the girls:
Hello dear ladies.My name is Chiamaka Ugoo, and I’m a young lady motivating writer like you. This book, “Helping Her Win,” is written by me. Ebuka Okoye, the 2014 senior prefect of this school, was the book’s sponsor. I’ll give you girls a brief true life story before we share the book; I don’t have much to say because everything you need to know and the pitfalls to avoid are all contained within this book.
One of the dangers of early sex is depicted in the story.In our second year of secondary school, I had a wonderful friend who unfortunately became pregnant, and that pregnancy devastated her life.
Will any of you be pleased to see a former classmate in the future and want to hide in shame because you believe you are failing in life?
Do not take any actions that will jeopardize your future. Concentrate on your academics. Make a name for yourself, your family, and your community. Believe in yourself and believe that you are capable of accomplishing anything you set your mind to.
Thank you, ladies.
The girls were overjoyed and glad to be present in the outreach.
