He is the founder and president of WallBuilders, a Texas-based organization that promotes conservative views on American history and heritage. He has also served on the executive committees of the Texas Republican Party and the Republican National Committee. Barton was born in Alton, Illinois in 1954. He earned a Bachelor of Religious Education degree from Oral Roberts University in 1976 and a Master of Theology degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1979.

Career
Barton began his teaching career in public schools, where he taught history and government. He later became involved in Christian education, and in 1988 he founded WallBuilders.
