Colin Cantwell (1932–2022) was an American concept designer and director who worked on films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and WarGames, but is most known for designing a number of classic Star Wars vehicles.
Cantwell was in the CBS News studio during the Apollo 11 moon landing, supporting Walter Cronkite as he narrated the landing while working for NASA.
Cantwell was hired by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in the early 1970s to create effects for and lead an early multimedia presentation called Voyage to the Outer Planets (1973), which depicted a spacecraft traveling the solar system’s outer planets.
Cantwell was hired to work on the original Star Wars picture in 1974 after previously working on visual effects for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey alongside Douglas Trumbull.
He developed the original ideas and concept models for a number of vehicles based on Lucas’ instructions, including the X-wing fighter, Y-wing fighter, TIE fighter, Star Destroyer, Death Star, Tantive IV (which was originally intended to be the Millennium Falcon), landspeeder, and sandcrawler.
Cantwell worked with Hewlett-Packard on the creation of their graphical Hewlett-Packard 9845C desktop computers, as well as providing a demo package to demonstrate their capabilities.
The computer graphics for the enormous displays in the NORAD set in the 1983 WarGames film were designed and created using HP 9845C desktop computers.
A number of objects from Cantwell’s collection were auctioned in 2014 for a total of $118,732.50.
