Robert Keith “Bobby” McFerrin, Jr. (born March 11, 1950) is a singer and conductor from the United States. His most famous song is “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” which he released in 1988. He has eleven Grammy Awards to his name. He is renowned for his unusual vocal methods, which include singing an accompaniment alongside the melody, using percussive effects, and producing huge leaps in pitch; and improvising most of his presented music, including melody, chords, and noises in a kind of scat singing.
He’s also renowned for being a solo vocalist who performs and records on a regular basis. He’s worked with musicians from both the jazz and classical worlds on many occasions. McFerrin is the son of operatic baritone Robert McFerrin and soprano Sara Copper, and was born in Manhattan, New York City. He went to Cathedral High School in Los Angeles and California State University, Sacramento, for his education. In 1975, McFerrin married Debbie Green. Taylor, Jevon, and Madison are their three children. Madison is a member of the band Cosmodrome and was a singer on Bobby McFerrin’s spirityouall tour in 2013. In 1988, McFerrin’s song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” became a No. 1 pop success in the United States, earning him Song of the Year and Record of the Year awards. Instrumentalists Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Zawinul, as well as drummer Tony Williams and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, have collaborated with McFerrin.
