On August 30, 2022, when he was 91 years old, Gorbachev passed away at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow. According to the hospital, he passed away as a result of a “severe and prolonged illness.” Since the beginning of the year 2020, he was continuously monitored by medical professionals prior to his passing.

In accordance with the terms of his will, Mikhail Gorbachev will be laid to rest in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, next to his late wife Raisa, who passed away in 1999.

Gorbachev outlived both Alexander Kerensky and Vasily Kuznetsov, the nominal leader of the USSR, who both reached the age of 89 before passing away. This makes Gorbachev the Russian leader with the longest record of longevity in history.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, paid tribute to him on Twitter, as did Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice of the United States of America, and Taoiseach Micheál Martin of Ireland.

Gorbachev was described as a “towering global leader, committed multilateralist, and tireless advocate for peace” by António Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, while former United States Secretary of State James Baker III said that “history will remember Mikhail Gorbachev as a giant who steered his great nation towards democracy.” Both of these statements were made in reference to the end of the Cold War. “He was a very pleasant man to deal with,” said former Prime Minister of Canada Brian Mulroney, adding that “history will remember him as a transformational leader.”
