In addition, this is the first time an American citizen has been killed in Ukraine. Rebecca Cabrera, Cancel’s mother, confirmed to CNN that her 22-year-old son was slain in Ukraine on Monday.
Her son was working for a private military contracting organization and had arrived in Ukraine in mid-March, according to her.

Rebecca, Joseph’s mother, said her husband, who is also the father of a seven-month-old child, leaped at the chance to assist Ukrainian soldiers in their fight against the Russians.
She further said that the guys battling Cancel, a New York native, had been unable to locate or recover his body.
His family saw him as a hero who wanted to aid the Ukrainian people and put an end to the conflict before US forces arrived.
She told Fox News her husband volunteered to go to Ukraine but also had aspirations of becoming a police officer or firefighter.
She said “he had dreams and aspirations of being a police officer or joining FDNY.”
“My husband was very brave and a hero,” Cancel told Fox News. “I did not expect to be a widow at 23 years old or for our son to be without a father. All I want is for him to come home, and to give him the proper burial he deserves.”
