MacMillan began her career as a reporter for CHIN Radio in Toronto before joining the CBC in 1972 as the co-host of New Direction, a weekly show on older citizens. She then became one of the first female national correspondents for Global News in 1973, before switching to CTV News in 1975. In 1975, she moved to CTV’s Montreal bureau, eventually becoming the bureau chief. She became the London bureau chief for CTV a year later, in 1976.
