Willard Scott Jr. Career
Scott, who joined TODAY in 1980, was perhaps best known for wishing happy birthday to viewers turning 100, a feature that grew in popularity over time, with photographs of centenarians appearing on Smucker’s jelly jars and Scott recognizing them in front of millions of people.
Scott, who started his 65-year career with NBC in 1950 as a page at the Washington, D.C. affiliate station, would also conduct his forecasts on the road, dazzling locals with his unflagging friendliness.
When ABC’s Good Morning America surpassed NBC’s Today in the ratings for the first time in over three decades in 1980, NBC News chief William Small responded by recruiting gap-toothed, overweight Scott to replace weatherman Bob Ryan. On the show, he was joined by Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley.
Scott had spent the preceding 13 years as the folksy weather guy at WRC-TV, NBC’s station in Washington, D.C., standing 6-foot-3 and weighing close to 300 pounds at times. Scott appeared on video taking a bath, emerging from a manhole on Groundhog Day, and wearing just a barrel to remind viewers that it was Tax Day in the nation’s capital.
He appeared on the Today show dressed as Carmen Miranda, complete with a dress, enormous earnings, platform shoes, and a fruit-topped hat; he was also dressed as Boy George and Cupid (for Valentine’s Day). On The Tonight Show, he took off his toupee and revealed his bald head to Jay Leno.
It didn’t matter that Scott wasn’t exactly a weather specialist. His reports were written by two experienced meteorologists, according to a People magazine story from 1980.
In early 1996, Scott stepped into semi-retirement, and Al Roker took his place. He continued to come on the morning show two days a week to wish centenarians a happy birthday. From the studio lot of WBBH, the NBC station in Fort Myers, Florida, he appeared. Smucker’s jellies, which sponsored his birthday honors on Today, used him as their advertising voice.
On December 11, 2015, Scott announced his complete departure from television. On Scott’s final day (December 15, 2015), a memorial was conducted with tape highlights from his time on the show. In his honor, the plaza outside Rockefeller Center was called Willard Scott Way.
From 1959 until her death in 2002, Scott was married to Mary Dwyer Scott, with whom he had two children, Mary and Sally. Scott married Paris Keena, whom he first met in 1977 while she was working at WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., on April 1, 2014, at the age of 80. They’ve been in a relationship since 2003.
