Victor Uwaifo Early Life and Background
Victor Uwaifo was born in the Nigerian city of Benin, in the state of Edo, and attended the Western Boys’ High School in Benin and St Gregory’s College in Lagos from 1957 to 1961. Victor Uwaifo Education
After finishing secondary school, he spent late nights playing with E.C. Arinze’s highlife. Uwaifo also worked briefly with Stephen Osadebe and Fred Coker before forming Melody Maestros in 1965.
He was 22 years old when he graduated from Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, where he studied graphics.

When Uwaifo won the first Golden record in Nigeria, West Africa, and Africa (given by Philips, West Africa) for his song “Joromi” in 1996, he made history in Nigeria.
Uwaifo toured the United States, Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, France, Hungary, Rome, Ghana, Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), Togo, Benin Republic, Spain, and Canada, earning a total of 12 golden records.
He was a member of the Performing Right Society and the Advisory Board of American Heritage University in California, as well as an Honorary Member of the Biographical Advisory Council in Cambridge, England. At the age of 24, he was the first Nigerian to win a gold disc in Africa (Joromi), which he released in 1965.
Uwaifo was the Chairman of Joromi Organization in Benin City, a multi-track recording and television studio. He owned and operated a gallery as well as the Victor Uwaifo Hall of Fame.
