Angie Motshekga Biography
Angie Motshekga (born June 19, 1955) is a South African politician and educator who has served as the Minister of Basic Education since May 2009 and was appointed as the Republic of South Africa’s acting president on July 2, 2021, while President Cyril Ramaphosa is in Zambia attending Kenneth Kaunda’s state funeral.
Motshekga was born in Soweto, Transvaal Province, on June 19, 1955. She attended various Soweto primary schools during her basic school years. She graduated from a Matatiele boarding school.

Angie Motshekga Education
Motshekga received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of the North. Motshekga earned a Bachelor of Educational Science and a Master’s degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Angie Motshekga was a teacher at Orlando High School from 1981 until 1983. After being hired as a lecturer at the Soweto College of Education, she submitted her resignation letter.
She joined the University of Witwatersrand as a lecturer in 1985. She taught there for nine years.

In April 2009, Motshekga was elected to the National Assembly. President Jacob Zuma, who was just elected, split the Education portfolio into two new ministries. Minister of Basic Education Motshekga was appointed. On May 11, 2009, she was sworn in as President of the United States. Between December 2011 and June 2012, textbooks were not supplied to disadvantaged Limpopo schools throughout her first term. She was pressured to retire or be removed from her post, but she refused.
Zuma kept Motshekga in her job after the 2014 general election.
In August 2015, Bathabile Dlamini deposed her as head of the women’s league. She ran for ANC national president in 2017 without seeking authorization from the women’s league. The league chastised Motshekga before endorsing Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for the leadership of the African National Congress.
Zuma resigned as president of South Africa in February 2018, and deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa was named as his replacement. Ramaphosa maintained Motshekga’s position.
She was named South Africa’s longest-serving education minister in 2019.
In that year’s general election, she was re-elected as an MP. She remained the minister of primary and secondary education.
Motshekga told students at Prospectus High School in Pretoria on February 15, 2021, that a “educated man will not rape.” Her remark sparked uproar. Her response was that her remark had been taken out of context.
